Archer Aviation, a US-based electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft maker, intends to manufacture 250 battery-electric air taxis in 2025, Reuters reported.

The company, which plans to get its eVTOL aircraft certified by the end of 2024 from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), aims to further increase its manufacturing capacity.

Called ‘Midnight’, the pilot-plus-four-passenger carrier is said to be in the process of drawing up certification rules.

Archer Aviation CEO Adam Goldstein was quoted by the news agency as saying: “In our first year, we will build 250 aircraft, our second year will build 500 aircraft, our third year will build 650 aircraft, and then we scale it up to around 2,000 aircraft per year.”

Once the aircraft is certified, Archer Aviation’s eVTOL aircraft is expected to compete in the market with other developers including Joby Aviation and Vertical Aerospace.

Despite being supported by companies such as Toyota Motor Corporation and Delta Air Lines, the eVTOL segment faces hurdles such as certification, battery technology upgrades, and a proper air traffic management system, according to Reuters.

In August, American aerospace firm Jaunt Air Mobility and South Korea’s MintAir signed a strategic partnership, under which MintAir expressed its intent to purchase up to 40 Jaunt Journey eVTOL aircraft.

The aircraft will be designed and manufactured in Montreal, Canada.
