4 sent to hospital after helicopter crash near Galiano Island

Two were airlifted to hospital after a helicopter crashed close to Galiano Island on Saturday.

Dan Bate, with Fisheries and Oceans Canada, tells CityNews it happened at around 12:30 p.m. when a private helicopter crashed off near Montague Harbour on Parker Island, shortly after takeoff.

Bate says four people were on board.

People in the area called the incident in and responded to the crash their own vehicles, Bate explains.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre assisted on scene, using several vehicles to help with the incident.

Marc-Antoine Brassard with the Transportation Safety Board of Canada, says the helicopter had difficulty as soon as it got into the air.

“[It] was just starting up and then rolled over and went down an embankment. The pilot and the front passenger sustained serious injuries and were transported to hospital,” said Brassard.

The pilot and front passenger were taken to Victoria Genera Hospital while the other two were assessed by B.C. Emergency Health Services and taken to hospital.
