COLUMBUS – The Ohio Department of Transportation has created free virtual classes for those who wish to become certified in the use of drones.

According to ODOT, 1.7 million drones are registered with the Federal Aviation Administration. However, only about 208,000 pilots are certified to fly them.

The ODOT e-learning courses are intended to provide fundamental knowledge to prepare for the Unmanned Aircraft Systems Remote Pilot Certification Exam.

Becoming a certified pilot will provide the knowledge and background needed to safely fly drones and open the door to so many opportunities. UAS conduct surveying and inspections of property, roads, bridges, buildings and telecommunications structures. They can do filmmaking, photography, homeland security and more.

ODOT reports that there are job opportunities around Ohio with companies looking for UAS pilots.

Interested persons can access the courses through the Ohio Local Technical Assistance Program at learning.transportation.ohio.gov.

Those with questions, or who need more information, should contact Ohio LTAP at ltap@dot.ohio.gov or 877-800-0031.
