SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) — Helicopters helped pull people out of high water near the Blanco River on Thursday after heavy rain flooded areas overnight.
The San Marcos Police Department posted on its Facebook page the Highway 80 bridge that goes over the river is closed while crews from the San Marcos Fire Department and STAR Flight evacuate people.
No deaths or injuries have been reported, SMPD said. The bridge has reopened.
The sudden rains surprised and stranded several people who are experiencing homelessness. One of them told KXAN the flood came so fast that it sounded like a freight train.
“Then all of the sudden, you just hear people screaming for help. One guy over here was stuck in a tree. I gave him some of my clothes, cause he came out with no shirt, half a pant leg and boots,” explained one person.
Travis County STAR Flight released video of one of the rescues, which can be watched in the video player below.
