ASHFORD, Wash. – Two climbers were rescued after one fell 80 feet into a crevasse on Mt. Rainier.

The two were on the mountain on May 11 when they called 911 at 8:10 p.m. to tell officials bad weather forced them to stop climbing at 12,800 feet. They were on the Kautz Glacier climbing route below the Wapowety Cleaver.

However, officials say the two did not ask for help. The next day, at 7:30 a.m., the party called again saying they were starting their descent.

Then, three hours later, the two called again when one climber said his partner had fallen into a large crevasse with arm and leg injuries.

The two climbers were rescued by helicopter from the Kautz Climbing Route on May 13, 2022.

The USAR F Company 2-135th Chinook helicopter along with a Portland rescue squad went to the mountain to help. Heavy and erratic winds forced them to wait several hours before returning to help the climbers.

Both ended up getting flown off the mountain. It’s unclear how serious the climbers’ injuries were.
